Excavations have revealed flint tools, polished stone axes, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age ceramic fragments (such as polished cups and carinated bowls), as well as collective burial sites, animal tusks, and crucible fragments.

The Retreat of Humanist Benito Arias Montano: In the 16th century, the renowned theologian, humanist, and court chaplain to King Philip II, Benito Arias Montano, chose this peaceful natural sanctuary as his personal retreat for nearly forty years. He was the first scholar recorded to explore the caves with a scientific interest, documenting his findings in letters and memoirs now preserved in the General Archive of Simancas.

Spiritual and Cultural Heritage: Crowning the summit above the caves stands the 16th-century Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles, a major spiritual landmark and home to the famous annual pilgrimage on September 8th, recognized as an Inmaterial Cultural Heritage asset.

3. The Cave Tour Experience

The guided tour route connects three of the main caverns in the complex. Because the site is a protected Cultural Heritage asset (BIC), no artificial tunnels have been cut through the rock to connect the caves internally. 1. La Sillita del Rey

This open-air cavern features one of the complex's greatest mysteries: 'La Bañera de la Reina' (The Queen's Bath), a deep basin carved directly into the rock floor. As part of a firm commitment to environmental protection, El Palacio Oscuro is closed to visitors annually between March 30th and September 30th.
